Adams Elementary School has added a book vending machine to their library. The vending machine is filled with a variety of books selected by the librarian and principal. The books are a range of interests and waiting on the students to earn a token. The token is earned and cannot be purchased. Our goal is to promote healthy relationships and kindness in collaboration with the love of reading and learning. The students caught “doing an act of kindness” will earn a token. Although we want our students to perform random acts of kindness for no reward, this will allow us to celebrate those who are going over and beyond to help others and to encourage others to do so.

Thanks to Principal, Tomasina Smitherman for her innovative ideas in reaching students at Adams Elementary School and promoting anti bullying, kindness, and the love of reading. Superintendent, Tony Reddick stated, “Adams Elementary School is a pilot site for this book vending program. We want all Gadsden City Schools (students) to promote kindness, antibullying and literacy. This program will allow us to spotlight those students who are involved in random acts of kindness. Too many times the parents only get called to the school for what their student is doing wrong, and this allows us to build social emotional learning and report what students are doing right.”
