Music
December 2013 marked the third Christmas program,Santa Bowed at Christmas. The whole school participated along with actors, narrators, soloists, and dancers during two shows. In addition to telling the Christmas story, proceeds of $6000 helped our school to make purchases that benefit all students. In general music classes, our students in k-5th may make instruments, make posters about instruments, play rhythm instruments, xylophone bells, and recorders, or hear presentations by JSU practicums. We sing using choral music and the textbook, Spotlight on Music.
Strings
Mitchell Beginner Strings is composed of fifth graders. Students may learn the violin, viola, or cello. Information is sent home at the beginning of the school year about the size of a violin needed, based on the student’s arm length. Some students provide their own violins, while others share a Gadsden City Schools instrument with another student in a different homeroom. The book, All for Strings, can be purchased at Gadsden Music, and fiddles may be rented there, also. Students perform at Mitchell at Christmas and at Awards Day.
Chorus
Thirty-eight students will participate in the first Elementary Honor Choir at GCHS. The honor choir is composed of about 150 students from Gadsden. They will sing seven songs accompanied by the Gadsden Symphony Orchestra. Students auditioned in October. Our own Mitchell Chorus is made up of fourth graders who sing at programs for Veteran’s Day,
